UNDERSTANDING THE AWARD & SCHOLARSHIP

Market animals and breeding animals have two different goals after their show career is over.

Market animals (male or female) go directly into the food supply chain as protein at the end of their “show career.” Therefore, these exhibitors don’t experience a return on investment at the end of the season outside of the sale to a meat packer or individual, so a higher award is offered to the winning exhibitors of market animals.

Breeding animal (females) projects are not terminal. The projects produce offspring for the exhibitors or can be sold to breeders for a premium based on the quality of the animals.  Therefore, at the end of the breeding animal’s show career, the winning exhibitors receive a lower payout because they will recognize returns later in the form of the sale of the animal and/or their future offspring.
